Uppsala Region bans fossil fuel advertising

Three regions with a combined population of 4.6 million have decided to ban fossil fuel advertising on public transportation.

Already in Sweden, the Stockholm and Västra Götaland regions had decided to ban fossil fuel advertising on sites that were under the control of the relevant municipal authorities.

Then, in February 2026, the Uppsala Region, with just over 400,000 residents, followed suit. As a result, now 4.6 million residents—nearly half of Sweden’s population —will no longer be exposed to fossil fuel advertising when they travel on public transport and in many other settings too.

These new local bans on promoting polluting products and services vary slightly in their wording, demonstrating how it is possible flexibly to implement advertising controls. In the Uppsala Region, for example, regulations have so far been introduced to ban fossil fuel advertising at public transport stops ,and the ban covers:

  • Vehicles and products that are powered wholly or partly by fossil fuels

  • Petrol stations' advertising gasoline, diesel, or other fossil fuels

  • Air transport and the aviation industry

  • Charter trips where the advertiser offers only air travel as the means of getting to a destination
