Uppsala Region bans fossil fuel advertising

Three regions with a combined population of 4.6 million have decided to ban fossil fuel advertising on public transportation.

The Stockholm and Västra Götaland regions previously decided to ban fossil fuel advertising in areas under political control. In February, the Uppsala Region, with just over 400,000 residents, followed suit. As a result, 4.6 million residents—nearly half of Sweden’s population—will no longer be exposed to fossil fuel advertising on public transportation and in many other settings.

The local bans vary slightly in their wording. In the Uppsala Region, regulations have so far been introduced to ban fossil fuel advertising at public transportation stops. The ban covers:

  • Vehicles and goods/products that are powered wholly or partly by fossil fuels

  • Gas stations' advertising of gasoline, diesel, or other fossil fuels

  • Air transport

  • Charter trips where the advertiser offers only air travel
