Has your city stopped adverts promoting pollution? These have…
You can visit these and a growing list of other wonderful cities for their art, heritage, nightlife, food and music, and now for a very special extra reason - they have stopped promoting pollution!
Just like the first places that banned tobacco advertising and made smoke free places for all to enjoy. Very soon others followed because it created more pleasant destinations. The Ministry for the Climate Emergency is backing the examples set by these forward thinking cities taking steps to clear the air and stop heating the planet. We think that pretty soon we’ll all look back and wonder why it took so long to end advertising and sponsorship that promotes fossil fuel pollution.
We made these postcards so you can write to your own town and city councils and ask them not to be left behind by these visionary places. Join in the movement calling time on high carbon ads for things like oil and gas companies, the airline industry and big SUVs.

There is a simple opportunity to stop promoting pollution. Ending adverts for fossil-fuel companies and heavily polluting products would bring advertising policy in line with science — just as past restrictions on tobacco ads protected public health.
Many cities and public bodies have already begun taking steps to restrict carbon-intensive advertising. Ending pollution-promoting ads is one of the quickest and most effective ways to reduce unnecessary, harmful and high-carbon consumption.
“National legislation does not go far enough, and this is one step we can take at a local level to limit exposure of harmful adverts on our communities. The overall aims of this policy are to support residents in making better choices that will support the improvement of their health and their environment, while it will contribute to long-term benefits and savings for the Council.”
