Subject: ending harmful advertising on council sitesDear Councillor ____surname____,
I'm writing to ask if our council has declared a climate emergency already? And if so, would the council be willing to adopt a Low Carbon Advertising Policy?
Advertising plays a key role in the climate crisis by fuelling demand for high carbon products such as polluting cars, SUVs, airline flights as well as promoting fossil fuel companies like Shell and BP.
Local authorities have control of the following areas of advertising:
- Advertising billboards and screens located on council-owned land.
- Passenger Transport Executives often control advertising policies for bus stop and rail advertising.
- Planning consent for advertising infrastructure (e.g new digital billboards) and some advertising content.
The Badvertising campaign have produced a toolkit for local policymakers including a model motion that could be proposed at council meetings, as well as precedents from other councils such as Liverpool, Norwich and North Somerset Council who are already taking action against advertising for harmful products. It also includes information on the relevant legislation.

Would you be willing to raise this issue at the Council?
Yours sincerely,
