Fossil Ads
Help us end pollution-promoting ads on London transport
Since the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, launched the London Environment Strategy in 2018 London has been committed to ending fossil fuel pollution and improving air quality. As part of that, Transport for London (TfL) - which owns one of the world’s biggest advertising estates - is charged with leading by example.
At the moment, however, London’s transport network is full of ads for heavily polluting fossil fuel products and lifestyles. These directly conflict with London’s plan to be a world leading city on action for clean air and the climate.
There is an opportunity to bring TfL’s advertising policy in line with commitments to reduce pollution. All it would take would be adding things like fossil fuel companies, airlines and SUV makers to the list of adverts that are no longer accepted.
London is part the C40 Cities global network of Mayors committed to leading action on climate. C40 has produced guidance for members on why and how to restrict carbon-intensive advertising in cities. Most Mayors are democratically accountable for the transport networks.

“The brain pollution of advertising is one of the least talked about and understood aspects of the climate and public health crises. We need to end the badvertising that undermines climate action for both our health and our ultimate survival.”
